I want you to discuss about the cover cards of the main series from GX onwards. The reason why I only chose those from GX onwards is because a) the early TCG sets are very different from the OCG sets, b) the old OCG sets had multiple cover cards on the same set, c) many of the later Duel Monsters era sets don't have cover cards that appear in the Duel Monsters anime. So, I'll "talk" about them a little and in which episode they were originally played. Maybe we find a pattern.

GX Era:
The Lost Millenium: Ancient Gear Golem (Episode 001, Tribute Summoned by Chronos)
Cybernetic Revolution: Cyber End Dragon (Episode 008, Fusion Summoned by Kaiser) (7 episodes after ACG)
Elemental Energy: Elemental HERO Shining Flare Wingman (Episode 033, Fusion Summoned by Judai) (25 episodes after CED)
Shadow of Infinity: Raviel, Lord of Phantasms (Episode 049, Special Summoned by Kagemaru) (16 episodes after EHSFW)
Enemy of Justice: Elemental HERO Shining Phoenix Enforcer (Episode 057, Fusion Summoned by Edo) (8 episodes after Raviel)
Power of the Duelist: Elemental HERO Dark Neos (Episode 079, Contact Fusion by Judai) (22 episodes after EHSPE)
Cyberdark Impact: Cyberdark Dragon (Episode 089, Fusion Summoned by Hell Kaiser) (10 episodes after Dark Neos)
Strike of Neos: Elemental HERO Air Neos (Episode 107, Contact Fusion by Judai) (18 episodes after Cyberdark Dragon)
Force of the Breaker: Volcanic Doomfire (Episode 109, Special Summoned by O'Brien in his imagination; actually played in episode 142) (2 episodes after Air Neos)
Tactical Evolution: Rainbow Dragon (Episode 130, Special Summoned by Johan) (21 episodes after Volcanic Doomfire)
Gladiator's Assault: Elemental HERO Chaos Neos (Episode 130, Contact Fusion by Judai) (1 turn after Rainbow Dragon)
Phantom Darkness: Yubel - The Ultimate Nightmare (Episode 155, Special Summoned by Yubel) (25 episodes after Chaos Neos)
Light of Destruction: Honest (Episode 160, send from the hand to the graveyard by Judai) (5 episodes after Yubel UN)

5D's Era

Crimson Crisis: Red Dragon Archfiend/Assault Mode (Jump Festa Special, aired between episode 038 and 39; Special Summoned by Jack) (22.5 episodes after Black Rose)
Raging Battle: Power Tool Dragon (Episode 036, Synchro Summoned by Lua) (2.5 episodes before RDA/AM)
Ancient Prophecy: Ancient Fairy Dragon (Episode 050, Special Summoned by Demack, but Luca Special Summoned her again two turns laters) (14 episodes after PTD)
Stardust Overdrive: Majestic Star Dragon (Episode 055, Synchro Summoned by Yusei) (5 episodes after AFD)
Absolute Powerforce: Majestic Red Dragon (Episode 059, Synchro Summoned by Jack) (4 episodes after MSD)
The Shining Darkness: Black-Winged Dragon (Episode 095, Synchro Summoned by Crow) (36 episodes after MRD's first appearance, 11 episodes after MRD's second appearance)

Storm of Ragnarok: Odin, Father of the Aesir (Episode 127, Synchro Summoned by Harald) (18 episodes after Shooting Star)

As of now, the release date between the current sets have a gap about roughly 3 months. That would be around 12 episodes, but we have several cover cards that debuted more than 12 episodes later after the previous cover cards. But there are also many cover cards that appear only a few episodes after the previous ones, so there don't need to be a 12-episode pattern. Furthermore, there are some cover cards who weren't released in previous sets, despite they had debuted during the time before the sets were released. I'm going to update this thread in the future just to make it up to date.

The cover card duelists:
GX: Judai, Kaiser, Edo, Johan, Chronos, O'Brien, Kagemaru and Yubel.
5D's: Yusei, Jack, Aki, Luca, Lua, Crow and Harald.
ZEXAL: Yuma/ZEXAL II, Shark/Nasch, Kaito, Mizael, Gauche, Dr. Faker and No.96.
ARC-V: Yuya, Yuto, Yugo and Jack.

While Ancient Gear Golem fits to the title "The Lost Millenium", it's odd to see Chronos's monster being the cover card instead of Flame Wingman, who is Judai's signature card in season 1.

It's odd to see Harald's monster being a cover card, but since it's a god card, I think it's fine. But I would prefer T.G. Halberd Cannon over Junk Berserker because now Bruno is the only member of Team 5D's who has not a cover card of the main set series.

And ARC-V has Jack as the odd one, but I guess there is nothing against it, although I wouldn't mind Kali Yuga, since Reiji hasn't got a cover card yet.

Yeah, that or Life Stream Dragon. Junk Berserker never deserved the spot.

I find it odd how the cover cards released for the Arc-V era are almost exclusively the Yu's, and not any of the other players; usually, at least some of the supporting cast get one card of theirs turned into the Cover Card, but not this time.

Also, can we really call the Jump Festa special part of 5D's? True, the Assault Mode monsters made their debut there, and all of them were released in the main sets, but the episode itself could be called a side story at best...

Well Arc-v is all about the Yu's...
I see a pattern behind it, it is always Yuuya --> Another person --> Yuuya --> Another person --> etc...

Judging from the pattern, Starve Venom Fusion Dragon is almost guaranteed for Invasion of Venom (who has thaught something different anyways)

I never said that the Jump Festa special was canon. I just said that it was aired between two regular episodes, and since I didn't want to disrupt the pattern by skipping a cover card, I still added the difference between the debut episodes of Black Rose Dragon, Red Daemon's Dragon/Buster and Power Tool Dragon. If Crimson Crisis had another cover card instead, it would be either Power Tool Dragon (the cover card of the next set, since it technically debuted before RDD/B) or Blackwing Armor Master.

The 5D's cover cards are a mess. Majestic Red Dragon became the cover card by the time of its second appearance and because it wasn't released in Stardust Overdrive. And we got Junk Berserker instead of Life Stream Dragon or T.G. Halberd Cannon. Or they could have release Shooting Quasar Dragon and make it the cover card instead.

Wing Raiders says hello. Reiji is guaranteed one in the future. I hope the fusion SP has Sora on it with Yuuri.

Both, Kurosaki and Reiji, appeared on SP set covers. However, I don't count them, since this thread is about the main set series.

Updated Starve Venom.
At the time of this posting you seem to have updated him into Nirvana High 2: Chivalric Boogaloo.

I'm definitely looking forward to finding out what the next cover card('s name) is.

Yeah, the name changes of the ARC-V era boosters is ridiculous.

I meant more the card's name than the pack's; we know what Raging Tempest's cover card looks like, and thanks to anime spoilers we have some solid guesses as to what it might be made from, but at this time we don't know what it's called.

EDIT: And my earlier remark was on how the first post lists Nirvana High Paladin twice (the second time being in place of Starve Venom Fusion Dragon).

To be honest, I just copy-pasted the previous line and forgot to change the card's name.
