Because if he didn't Calamity would never have seen the light of the day, not to mention that being such an anti-climatic move, better to almost lose but then look cool when the supposed reversal happens.

Think Mofiz, Yusei did that so you could make a deck that uses Calamity. I think that's a more than enough logical reason.
You should even thank the writers for their bad story planning.
