    The Gagaga Thread

    Gagaga Magic

    Gagagas are the flagship Xyz-centric theme introduced in Yugioh Zexal. Currently the Gagaga group is split between a school delinquent theme and a prefect theme
    Gagaga Head
    DARK / Spellcaster-Effect / Level 6 / 2100 ATK / 2000 DEF
    If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters, you can Normal Summon this card without Tributing, but its Level becomes 4. When this card is Normal Summoned: You can target up to 2 "Gagaga" monsters in your Graveyard, except "Gagaga Head"; Special Summon them, also you cannot Special Summon other monsters for the rest of this turn, except by Xyz Summon using only "Gagaga" monsters. An Xyz Monster that was Summoned using this card on the field as Xyz Material gains this effect.
    ● If it is Xyz Summoned: Draw 1 card.
    The head of the Gagaga Gang calls forth his fallen comerades for a Rank 4 Xyz Summon. The card is Primarily tailored to Summoning Rank 4s, but Gagagas have ways around that.
    Gagaga Magician
    DARK / Spellcaster-Effect / Level 4 / 1500 ATK / 1000 DEF
    Once per turn, during your Main Phase, you can declare a Level from 1 to 8 to activate this card's effect. Until the End Phase, the Level of this card becomes the declared Level. You can only control 1 face-up "Gagaga Magician". This card cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster.
    A callback to the Dark Magician. Between himself and his junior, he can make any generic 2 material Xyz monster between Ranks 1 and 8. His effect is simple, yet there's a lot you can do with him.
    Gagaga Mancer
    DARK / Spellcaster-Effect / Level 4 / 100 ATK / 100 DEF
    Once per turn: You can target 1 "Gagaga" monster in your Graveyard, except "Gagaga Mancer"; Special Summon that monster, but you cannot Special Summon monsters for the rest of this turn, except "Gagaga" monsters. If this card is detached from an Xyz Monster as an Xyz Material and sent to the Graveyard to activate the effect of that monster: You can target 1 Xyz Monster you control; it gains 500 ATK until the end of the turn.
    Mancer was 1 restriction short of being absolutely broken. You can only play Gagaga Monsters for the rest of the turn after you use her effect, which wouldn't be too bad if only we had better Xyz to work with. That being said, the Xyz we do have access to can put in a lot of battle damage. Regular builds can make due with 1 or none until we get a rank 6 Gagaga. Rank 4 builds can try for multiples.
    Gagaga Girl
    DARK / Spellcaster-Effect / Level 3 / 1000 ATK / 800 DEF
    You can target 1 "Gagaga Magician" you control; this card's Level becomes equal to the Level of that target. If you Xyz Summon an Xyz Monster using only this card and "Gagaga" monsters, the Xyz Monster gains this effect. ● When this card is Xyz Summoned: Target 1 face-up Special Summoned monster your opponent controls; the target's ATK becomes 0.
    She's the perfect partner for Gagaga Magician and is Number 33: Machu Mech's favorite Xyz material. Overlay her with Magician and shrink a powerful opponent's monster to fire off massive damage with Machu Mech. However, unlike Magician, she doesn't play very well with non-Gagaga cards. She's gotten much easier to use with new support, so 1-2 copies of her can work just fine.
    Gagaga Child
    DARK / Spellcaster-Effect / Level 2 / 800 ATK / 1200 DEF
    If you control a "Gagaga" monster other than "Gagaga Child", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). When you do: You can target 1 "Gagaga" monster you control with a different Level than this card; this card's Level becomes the Level of that monster. You cannot conduct your Battle Phase the turn you activate this effect.
    Gagaga Child takes what Gagaga Girl does, and takes it a step further, letting you special summon it as well. However, unlike Girl, he has a drawback for using his level changing ability. Unfortunately he didn't work too well with non-Magician Gagagas, but Rank 3s have gotten better, and this next card makes him worth at least two copies in the deck, if not three.
    Gagaga Sister
    DARK / Spellcaster-Effect / Level 2 / 200 ATK / 800 DEF
    When this card is Normal Summoned: You can add 1 "Gagaga" Spell/Trap Card from your Deck to your hand. You can target 1 other "Gagaga" monster you control; the Levels of both that monster and this card become the combined current Levels of those 2 monsters, until the End Phase. You can only use this effect of "Gagaga Sister" once per turn.
    This is the card that finally makes Gagaga's good at toolboxing xyz monsters. Until Sister came along, you could never get a +0 Xyz Summon. All your Xyz Summons were a -1 in card economy, and you just can't keep doing that in the long run. Gagaga Sister fundamentally transforms the deck into a cohesive set of monsters. She can Rank 2 or 4 with Child, Rank 5 with Girl (Again, see Number 33) and she can work with Magician to make not only Ranks 1-8, but even Rank 9 and 10 Xyz monsters without using off-themed tech. We'll get to the Spells that make her so good soon, but take my word for it; Run 3.
    Gagaga Clerk
    EARTH / Warrior-Effect / Level 2 / 400 ATK / 800 DEF
    If you control a "Gagaga" monster, except "Gagaga Clerk", you can Special Summon this card (from your hand).
    Clerk is a Warrior counter-part to Gagaga Child, and is in-theme with the second half of the Gagaga group. Run 3 Child before running 1-2 of her. You basically want to use her when you want to save your Child for potential Magician or Girl plays. Her only real advantage over Child, is being a Warrior, with access to Reinforcements of the Army and The Warrior Returning Alive, as well as access to Warrior-specific Xyz with this next card.
    Gagaga Caesar
    EARTH / Spellcaster-Effect / Level 3 / 1800 ATK / 600 DEF
    Cannot attack unless you control another face-up "Gagaga" monster. Once per turn: You can banish 1 monster from your Graveyard that has a Level; the Levels of all face-up "Gagaga" monsters you currently control become the Level of that monster. This card cannot be used as a Synchro Material Monster.
    The Leader of the Prefects supported by Clerk. Caesar takes what Magician and Girl have, and rolls them into one monster. He makes all Gagagas you control the same level allowing even Gardna, Girl, and Clerk become compatible for high-ranking summons. You'll want to run high-level tech to really capitalize off of its effect. If you don't run enough high-level techs though, its best not to use him.
    Gagaga Gardna
    EARTH / Warrior-Effect / level 4 / 1500 ATK / 2000 DEF
    When an opponent's monster declares a direct attack: You can Special Summon this card from your hand. When this card is targeted for an attack: You can discard 1 card; this card cannot be destroyed by that battle.
    While Gardna isn't that crucial a member to the team, he is a level 4 monster that Summons itself and protects your life from harm, to serve as Xyz Material later. Both Sister, and Caesar appreciate Gagagas who summon themselves, and since he's also searchable, running at least 1 won't hurt you, but many prefer not to touch him.
    Gagaga Acadamy Emergency Network
    Normal Spell
    If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters: Special Summon 1 "Gagaga" monster from your Deck.
    You cannot Special Summon any other monsters, except by Xyz Summon, during the turn you activate this card.
    You can only activate 1 "Gagaga Academy Emergency Network" per turn.
    Wow, a summon straight from the deck? This must be a Staple at 3, right? Don't jump to conclusions with this one. Acadamy certainly isn't a bad card, but its caked in restrictions that keep it in check. You can't use Clerk or Child or Mancer with it. Your opponent has to control a monster, so its dead when going first. You also can't use more than one even if its negated by Solemn Warning, so it clogs in multiples. Academy is a good card, but we have access to another powerful and less-restrictive search card. 1-2 copies is my recommendation. Gagagas aren't always monster heavy and this does a good job of giving you that Magician or Girl you need.
    Gagagarevenge
    Equip Spell
    Target 1 "Gagaga" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it and equip it with this card. When this card leaves the field, destroy the equipped monster. When this card is sent to the Graveyard because the equipped monster was used as an Xyz Material: All Xyz Monsters you currently control gain 300 ATK.
    This is a card you need 3 of. It makes Sister a 1-card Xyz summon, and its only draw back is that destroying it will stop your move. Otherwise the card has no restrictions. It won't shut off Clerk or Child or other copies of itself. Its a themed-searchable Premature Burial. Its also not completely dead first turn. If you search it with Gagaga sister, you can activate Wonder Wand on sister, draw 2, Revive sister with Revenge, and then Special Summon Clerk or Child for a Rank 4 Xyz on the first turn. Run 3 with or without the Wonder Wands.
    Gagagabolt
    Normal Spell
    If you control a "Gagaga" monster: Target 1 card on the field; destroy that target.
    This is another very solid card. Sister can search it to remove threats that just have to go. Gagagabolt is a solid 2 or 3-of. However its not substitute for Mystical Space Typhoon, and the like though. You must protect your Xyz Summons.
    Onomatopaira
    Normal Spell
    You can only activate 1 "Onomatopaira" per turn. Send 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard; add up to 2 of these monsters from your Deck to your hand (you cannot add 2 from the same category).
    ● 1 "Zubaba" monster
    ● 1 "Gagaga" monster
    ● 1 "Gogogo" monster
    ● 1 "Dododo" monster

    Dododo Buster
    EARTH / Warrior-effect / level 6 / 1900 ATK / 800 DEF
    If your opponent controls a monster and you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand), but its Level becomes 4. When this card is Tribute Summoned: You can target 1 "Dododo" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target in face-up Defense Position.

    Dododo Warrior
    EARTH / Warrior-effect / level 6 / 2300 ATK / 900 DEF
    You can Normal Summon this card without Tributing, but its original ATK becomes 1800. If this card attacks, negate all card effects that activate in the opponent's Graveyard, until the end of the Damage Step.

    Gogogo Giant
    EARTH / Rock-effect / level 4 / 2000 ATK / 0 DEF
    When this card is Normal Summoned: You can target 1 "Gogogo" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target in face-up Defense Position, then change this card to Defense Position. If this card attacks, it is changed to Defense Position at the end of the Battle Phase.
    While not a Gagaga card, Onomatopaira is our best search card after Gagaga Sister, or even before Gagaga Sister. Grabbing any Gagaga from the deck is hugely important, giving Sister a Clerk or Child to pair with, or vice-versa. Ideally you discard Gagaga Magician to Search Sister, who searches Revenge to revive Magician for an Xyz Summon. Dododo Buster is great as he not only works with Caesar, but he can work with other copies of itself to make Rank 6s. Dododo Warrior however doesn't conflict with Network, making Rank 6s easier than Buster. Gogogo Giant on the other hand gives you easy rank 4s. Run 3 of Onomatopair, and pick any combination of the above you like.

    Now while all the Gagagas covered here so far are relatively playable, the following cards are relatively not playable, to varying degrees.
    Gagagawind
    Normal Spell
    Special Summon 1 "Gagaga" monster from your hand as a Level 4 monster.

    Gagagatag
    Normal Spell
    Until your next Standby Phase, each "Gagaga" monster you currently control gains 500 ATK for each "Gagaga" monster you currently control.
    You can only activate 1 "Gagagatag" per turn.

    Gagagadraw
    Normal Spell
    Banish 3 "Gagaga" monsters from your Graveyard; draw 2 cards.

    Gagagaback
    Quick-play Spell
    During the turn a "Gagaga" monster you control was destroyed by battle and sent to the Graveyard: Special Summon as many monsters from your Graveyard as possible that were destroyed by battle this turn, in face-up Defense Position, then take 600 damage for each monster Special Summoned by this effect. You can only activate 1 "Gagagaback" per turn.
    The rest of the Gagaga Spells are fairly lackluster. Gagagawind however has a nice niche as a 1-of due to how it interacts with Gagaga Sister for an easy Rank 6. It's a minus 1 in card economy, but sometimes its better to eat the minus than make no play at all. However, the rest you want to avoid. Tag can give you OTK power with a field of 4 or 5 Gagagas, but the over-commitment to the field could very well kill you if it fails. Gagagadraw is inferior to Wonder Wand and Onomatopair. You don't want to banish monsters you can use Revenge on. Gagagaback is reliant on using Gagagas to actually battle, which isn't really a strategy worth competing with. Originally you'd use it with Mystic Tomato to swarm the field, but its just not necessary anymore.

    Now for some of our themed trap cards, and you should avoid most of them.
    Gagagashield
    Normal Trap
    Target 1 Spellcaster-Type monster you control; equip this card to that target. Twice per turn, it cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects.

    Gagagaguard
    Normal Trap
    If you control 2 or more face-up "Gagaga" monsters: This turn, monsters you control cannot be destroyed by battle or by card effects.

    Gagagarush
    Normal Trap
    When a face-up "Gagaga" monster(s) you control is targeted by the effect of an opponent's monster: Negate the effect of that opponent's monster, and if you do, destroy it, then inflict damage to your opponent equal to the destroyed monster's ATK or DEF in the Graveyard (whichever is higher).
    To be honest, these traps are better in terms of playability compared to the last group of Spells, but they really aren't that useful on a consistent basis. Shield is the most relevant card, but we usually xyz with our Sellcasters for non-Spellcasters, barring Norito, who appreciates the help from Gagaga Shield. Guard is actually solid protection against destruction effects, and is theoretically good if ever you wanted to try beat-down with just Gagaga monsters, with Tag, Back, etc, (and it protects non-Gagagas too). However, space is tight and Stun / Typhoon / Lance is usually much better. Gagagarush needed to be stronger, and not just against monsters. It stops powerful effects like Number 101, Veiler, etc. but not being able to protect from Spells or Traps really takes it down a notch.

    Finishing off the main theme is our 2 Xyz Monsters
    Gagaga Cowboy
    EARTH / Warrior-Xyz-Effect / Rank 4 / 1500 ATK / 2400 DEF
    2 Level 4 monsters
    Once per turn you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; apply this effect, depending on this card's battle position.
    ● Attack Position: If this card attacks an opponent's monster this turn, it gains 1000 ATK and the opponent's monster loses 500 ATK, during the Damage Step only.
    ● Defense Position: Inflict 800 damage to your opponent.

    Gagaga Samurai
    EARTH / Warrior-effect / Rank 4 / 1900 ATK / 1600 DEF
    2 level 4 Monsters
    Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 "Gagaga" monster you control; that monster can make a second attack during each Battle Phase this turn. When another monster you control is targeted for an attack: You can change this card to Defense Position and change the attack target to this card, then proceed to damage calculation.
    Cowboy is also a member of the Delinquent series while Samurai seems like he's from some other archtype entirely. Samurai can use his effect on other Gagagas sure, but really the best one to use it on is himself or Cowboy anyways. You might not even use them due to extra deck space being so tight, but they're still solid cards for squeezing in that final bit of damage you may need to end a duel. Try to fit at least one of them in, if only for having at least 1 themed Xyz monster. Hopefully a Spellcaster one makes an appearance.

    Now let's wrap up with some tech choices.

    Tragoedia is great for Rank 10 access combined with Ceasar, and if you have a Dododo Buster in the graveyard, you can use it with Magician to make a Rank 6, and other Ranks the more monsters you've got for Trag to target. Its also steals opponent's monsters for more Xyz Summoning. Definitely a tech to consider.

    Cyber Dragon is another decent monster who can bait backrows and beat over most level 4s. it helps make Rank 5s with Magician or Ceasar Plays, and is another viable option for the deck.

    Swordsman of Revealing Light is another Tech-choice. It defends against attacks and sets up for a felgrand Play very nicely, and is worth consideration on those grounds.

    Maxx "C" is another solid card, since it helps dig for your hand trap monsters like Trag and Swordsman, and also Effect Veiler.

    You can probably make a GagagaXGogogo Variant, but Gogogos are probably better off with their Zombie Variant. Dododos have gotten a nice set of support, but its probably better to just run a few tech'd monsters instead. Buster is plenty Dododo enough. Zubaba wasn't even a true archtype before this card was printed. Stay away from them.

    Wonder Wand is an important tech choice to consider. As stated earlier, it combos really well with Sister and Child. If Space permits, I'd recommend anywhere between 1-3 copies.

    Mind Control is a decent option to consider. Gagaga Magician can match with any level 8 or lower monster, and Downerd Magician and Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger can summon themselves over a stolen Xyz.

    Xyz Reborn is another powerful tech choice. It clogs at multiples and is better late game, but being able to revive one of your powerful Xyz monsters like Exciton Knight (during the opponent's battle phase), or Number 11 can really steal games for you. consider running a copy, in addition to a small, more normal trap line-up.

    Dark Renewal is another card that let's us have some control of the field if we aren't able to make an Xyz Play. One should be cautious when using it since frequently we'll only have a non-spellcaster Xyz on board, but it's a good contingency plan to have for thos times where you don't open with an Xyz play available.

    The Extra deck

    Gagaga's biggest strength can also be their most vexing deck building challenge. Gagagas have access to every rank from 1 to 10, so space in the Extra deck is tight. So here's a tip, Run at least 1 of each Rank, barring Rank 1, with multiples dedicated to Ranks 4 and 6. 4 and 6 are your most important Ranks based on the content we've discusses so far. Here's a sample Extra deck.

    As we go down the list of Xyz Monsters, we encounter more options in each Rank to choose from. The tip here is to try and diversify your extra deck so that you don't double-up on similar effects. You could decide that Number 33 is too situational to pull off and add in a Number 61: Volcasaurus. You could decide you want defense in your rank 3 slot and use Zenmaines or Fortune Tune. You could also vary your Rank 2 Slot similarly, but be sure to have a strong Rank 4, 6, and 8 pool.

    Thanks for creating this thread. I thought Onomatopaira was the Utopia Field Spell. Now I have a better replacement for Lavalval Chain to search my Gagaga Sister

    Is there a way to make Gagagas work as an engine for Spellbooks to help summon the Prophecy Xzy monsters (Empress of Prophecy, Hierophant of Prophecy) but also the other few but cool spellcaster Xyz monsters available like Magi Magi Magician Gal, Number 11: Big Eye, Norito the Moral Leader, etc? If so what, ratios would you recommend?
